It goes without saying that you need to ensure that you pet has fresh drinking water available at all times. This is particularly important on hot days when pets are exposed to direct sun light. I have always thought my dog was quite posh, as rather than drinking from his water bowl he enjoyed drinking water straight from the kitchen tap. This often means he has to jump up at the sink and usually ends up spraying water everywhere!
You can imagine my delight when I went on line and discovered you can buy pet water fountains, which can be operated by your pet. They simply have to stand on a metal plate which activates the fountain. –Obviously the only drawback is training your pet to activate the fountain by themselves!

Owning more than once pet can often make life very difficult when you need to transport them at the same time, but separately. I have a friend who regularly enters her pets into shows and she overcomes this problem by using a pet stroller which has been designed to transport more than two pets at once!
Her pet cat sits comfortably in the top compartment and her dog is able to reside in the compartment below. Both animals seem happy with this arrangement and it makes my friends life a lot easier. The stroller has large wheels which enable her to manoeuvre it easily whilst her pets are inside.
As a dog owner for many years now, I am always on the lookout for gadgets which could make my life a little easier. One of my least favourite tasks has to be having to get up out of bed in the middle of the night to let the dog out into the garden. Most nights it is usually cold and miserable and I have quite a difficult time seeing where Bruno is as he is quite dark in colour and once he goes to the bottom of the garden it can take me ages to actually beckon him back into the house again! I have since come across and an LED key ring which can be attached to the dog collar and as a result I can now see every move Bruno makes even when he is at the very bottom of the garden, so I do not have to worry about him escaping through the fence!

If you have a cat, you will understand the tediousness of cleaning the cat litter tray and how, if it is left too long, the smell can become rather unpleasant. Recently whilst researching different cat litter trays and cat litters online, I came across an article concerned with training your cat to use a human toilet! Now the idea of this sounded perfect……but the implementation of it is rather a little more difficult!
Even though the article explained the best way to get your cat to start using a human toilet I have to say my cat Ginger did not seem to grasp the idea!
It is quite a shame really as it would have been great not to have to spend money on buying cat litter and not having to worry about cleaning it regularly!
Concerns with regards to the increasing weight of individuals across the country are not exclusive to humans! According to a survey from the Peoples Dispensary for sick animals, half our dogs will die of obesity or suffer from painful and early deaths due to their owners allowing them to become overweight.
Like many pet owners I am guilty of indulging my pet dog with a dog treat every now and again, although some people take this to the extreme and as well as providing pets with regular meals, they constantly give them scraps during their own meal times.
With the addition of little exercise this can soon mean pooches pile on the pounds.
Be careful your own pet does not fall victim to being over fed and monitor their weight closely.
Previously if you were allergic to animals, or more accurately the hair that comes from animals, then chances are you have never had the pleasure of owning a pet. Well all that is changing now with the introduction of anti-allergy pets. One of the most famous anti-allergy pets at the moment is the President of America, Barak Obama’s Portuguese water dog which he bought for his youngest daughter who suffers from allergies. Portuguese water dogs, which do not shed so much hair, are said to be hyper allergenic, making them less aggravating to people with allergies. Another anti-allergy pet that I mentioned a couple of days ago on this blog is the micro pig, which have no fur but skin and hair similar to ours, so now even if you suffer from allergies you do not have to miss out on owning a pet.
In a couple of weeks one of my best friends is due to go away on holiday to Canada and she has worryingly asked me to look after her 2 new guinea pigs for her whilst she is away. It’s not that I don’t want to look after them for her it’s just that I don’t have a very good track record when it comes to looking after friends/neighbours pets’ whist they are away. A couple of years ago a neighbour asked me to look after her cat when she was in Spain. It was all going well until one night when I came to feed the cat it didn’t turn up, it had a cat flap so it could come and go as it pleased but for the past 5 nights it had always been back in the house when it came to feeding. So I left the food in her bowl and figured she would eat it over night, but when I checked the next morning the food has not been touched and there was a note through my neighbours door saying ‘I’m sorry but I ran over your cat, please call me’. Turns out someone has run over and killed the cat and I had to break the news to my neighbours when they came back from their holiday!
Latest pet crazy that has come to England from America is the very cute but also very bizarre, micro pig. This little pink pet measures only 8in from snout to tail, which is about the same size as a baby rabbit or a guinea pig. There are many advantages of owning a micro pig as they are clean, highly intelligent and very loving pets. The micro pig is also an ideal pet for anyone who suffers from allergies as they have hair and skin similar to ours, not fur. There is only one major drawback to these perfect pink pets, the cost of one can start from £650, as one journalist put it, that’s the world’s most expensive bacon.
Recently there has been a growing market for people wanting to but meerkats as pets, following on from the successful ‘Compare the Meerkat’ advertisement from website comparison company, Compare the Market. Although they might be cute and fluffy, unfortunately meerkats do not make suitable pets due to the fact that they are really smelly! They are also not used to living indoors or on their own, their natural habitat is to live outside in groups as they like lots of company. They can also be quite aggressive, not only to one another but also to their owners as they are used to surviving outside in the wild. My best advice is to visit meerkats in the zoo or in their natural habitat in South Africa or in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana.
Last year the government brought in a new legislation that allowed dogs to travel to selected countries without having to spend weeks away from their owners in quarantine. But it’s not as simple as just hoping on a plane with Rover on a lead, owners need to be organised as they need to prepare at least seven to eight months before travelling. To qualify for a pet passport, Rover must comply with the following criteria, in the order shown:
• Dog must be fitted with a microchip
• Dog must be vaccinated against rabies
• Dog must be at least 3 months old
• Proof of date of birth/age
• Microchip number
• The date of vaccination
• The vaccine product name
• The batch number
• The date the booster vaccination is due
• Your dog may need a blood test to show that the vaccine has given
• Your dog must have been issued with an official ‘PETS Certificate’ by a government authorised vet known as a Local Veterinary Inspector (LVI)
